keeps the bats out.
once, my housemate and I were sitting around watching old tv batman episodes. in one, our hero (Adam West) and the boy wonder had been stranded and tied up to a buoy in the middle of the ocean. to add insult to injury, they'd been restrained with their own bat-tility belts.
as they escaped, I muttered to my friend, "they have the bats in their belts free."
I was pretty proud of myself for that one.

you'd think I'd learn. sigh.
but enough about that.
go see no country for old men. it is the distilled essence of a thriller. minimal dialogue and exposition. pacing that tortures and keeps you nearly breathless. skillful players.
it's like two hours of intense foreplay with no climax.
in a good way.

I've come to use my Pouva (toycamera acquired in Hungary) almost exclusively. its mood suits mine.
one of its "issues" is that it has a tough shutter button and a light weight so I often get camera shake. and strangely, I've come to like the random softness that generates.
this from Philadelphia. although I see this scene everywhere I go.

Beowulf 3-D. I'm pleased to say I am not so jaded a moviegoer that a spear thrust into my nose from out of the movie screen makes me jump back then laugh at myself for doing it. if you get a chance to see it in 3-D, do.
Coraline 3-D. can't wait. highly recommend the audiobook read by Gaiman himself.
Sweeney Todd. can't wait. Tim Burton plus Johnny Depp equals happiness for me. I'll be so glad to see him in something besides a pirate suit. Depp, not Burton. I'd be happy to see Tim in a pirate suit.
random high school memory: traveling on a bus to a Forensics Meet. my event was Extemp. Valerie (high school actress whom I believe went on to run a theatre troupe) was listening to her walkman and singing. the lyrics of the song were dark. morbid. I was intrigued and asked what she was listening to. "Sweeney Todd," she said and explained the plot. what a marvelous thing for a high school girl to know.
hooray for the high school geeks and nerds and other knowledgeable outsiders of the world. hooray for intelligence with a sense of humor. hooray for commercial artists who manage to beat the system of unimaginative, repetitive bullshit and give us something magical to look forward to.
